Best Time To Visit Char Dham Yatra

Hi, I’m Yuvraj, and I have completed the Chota Char Dham (Uttarakhand Char Dham Yatra), covering Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath, through three different trips.

I first visited Kedarnath, then Badrinath, and later completed Yamunotri and Gangotri. Each journey was done in a different month. Based on my multiple visits, I won’t say that any single month is perfect for everyone.

Everyone has different preferences—some people want snowfall and cold weather, some prefer to avoid extreme cold, some don’t mind the weather but want to avoid heavy crowds, while others look for pleasant weather and comfortable temperatures.

In this blog, I’ll share month-wise details of the Char Dham Yatra so you can decide which time suits you best according to your travel style and comfort.

Introduction About Chardham

Char Dham Yatra is a sacred pilgrimage, which involves visiting four revered temples, including Yamunotri , Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath, nestled in the lap of the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand. The Yatra holds great spiritual significance; it is believed that pilgrims who undertake this journey cleanse their sins and help them achieve salvation (Moksha).

The Yatra is traditionally completed in a clockwise route, starting from Yamunotri, proceeding to Gangotri and Kedarnath , and ending at the Badrinath temple . Each shrine holds Immense mythological importance associated with different Hindu deities and is linked with many ancient texts such as the Mahabharata and the Puranas.

However, due to the extreme weather conditions of Uttarakhand, the yatra took place in the summer season, from late April to October, and it closed in winter due to heavy snowfall. Choosing the right time for the Char Dham Yatra is an important consideration for safety, accessibility and comfort, which is typically based on the seasonal weather of the Himalayas, which changes rapidly.

Char Dham Yatra Opening And Closing Dates

The opening and closing dates of Char Dham temples are essential in planning a Char Dham Yatra, as these temples open only for a limited time period, from May to October, and close in winter due to heavy snow. These dates are decided by the official committee of Char Dham on the basis of the Hindu Panchang and Celestial movements.

  • Annual Opening Of Char Dham Yatra : Generally, the Char Dham yatra is open on the occasion of Akshay Tritya (which occurs in April or May); the grand opening ceremony, often called the Kapat Opening ceremony or Utsav Murti Mela, takes place during the opening of Char Dham temples.

  • Closing of Char Dham Yatra : Annually, Char Dham Temples are closed in winter, from October to March, due to harsh weather and heavy snow, and the idols of Char Dham deities are shifted to their winter abodes, often called Winter Char Dham . As with the opening, the closing ceremony also involves a last puja ceremony of the peak pilgrimage season.

I am sharing the tentative opening and closing date of all the Char Dham temples in below section but if you need exact date and complete process check out our blog.

Best Months To Visit Char Dham (Summary)

1) Char Dham Yatra in May – Is It the Best Time to Visit?

Yes, May is one of the best months to visit the Char Dham Yatra.
It marks the beginning of the pilgrimage season after the winter closure, when the temples of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath reopen between late April and early May. This period is spiritually significant as devotees get the opportunity for the first darshan of the season.

Why May Is Ideal for Char Dham Yatra

  • Pleasant weather with temperatures between 10°C to 25°C
  • Clear skies and excellent mountain visibility
  • Safe road conditions and smooth trekking routes
  • Full availability of transport, ponies, palkis, and helicopter services

During my visit to Kedarnath in May, the weather remained stable with no rainfall or extreme cold. The temperature was so comfortable that the entire Kedarnath trek was completed wearing just a single T-shirt, without the need for heavy winter clothing.

Crowd & Cost in May

  • Very high crowd, especially in the first two weeks after temple opening
  • Long darshan queues are common
  • Hotel prices, food costs, and helicopter tickets are more expensive than off-season months

Despite higher costs and crowds, May is ideal for first-time pilgrims, families, and senior citizens due to favorable weather and well-managed facilities.

Quick Travel Tips for May

  • Book hotels and helicopter tickets well in advance
  • Plan darshan during early morning hours
  • Carry light woolens for evenings, though daytime remains comfortable

2) Char Dham Yatra in June

June is one of the most popular months for the Char Dham Yatra due to stable weather, clear skies, and full accessibility across all four shrines—Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. It is considered the last ideal month before the monsoon season begins.

Why June Is a Good Time for Char Dham Yatra

  • Pleasant daytime temperatures ranging between 10°C to 25°C
  • Clear visibility of Himalayan peaks
  • Well-maintained roads and trekking routes
  • All services fully operational, including helicopter, pony, palki, buses, and taxis

June offers excellent conditions for trekking to Kedarnath, sightseeing, and comfortable travel, making it suitable for families and group pilgrims.

Crowd & Travel Conditions in June

  • High crowd levels due to summer vacations and peak pilgrimage season
  • Increased traffic on mountain roads
  • Higher hotel prices and limited availability if not booked in advance

As June progresses, especially toward the end of the month, light pre-monsoon showers may occur, but they usually do not disrupt travel significantly.

Pros & Cons of Char Dham Yatra in June

Pros:

  • Ideal weather for darshan and trekking
  • Safe road conditions
  • Maximum service availability

Cons:

  • Heavy crowd and long waiting times
  • Higher travel and accommodation costs

Quick Travel Tips for June

  • Start journeys early in the morning to avoid traffic congestion
  • Pre-book hotels and helicopter services
  • Carry light woolens and rain protection for sudden weather changes

3) Char Dham Yatra in September – Weather, Crowd & Personal Experience

September is one of the best months to visit Char Dham Yatra for pilgrims who prefer fewer crowds and peaceful darshan. After the monsoon starts retreating, the weather becomes stable again, making travel safe and scenic.

Why September Is a Good Time for Char Dham Yatra

  • Moderate and comfortable temperatures ranging between 8°C to 18°C
  • Clear skies with fresh greenery after monsoon
  • Roads are repaired and reopened after rains
  • Helicopter services and transport resume smoothly

I personally traveled to Badrinath in September, and it was a great experience. The crowd was much smaller compared to May and June, allowing a calm and spiritual darshan. The weather was cooler than May, but not extreme or harsh, making it comfortable for travel and sightseeing.

Crowd & Travel Conditions in September

  • Moderate crowd level, ideal for peaceful pilgrimage
  • Shorter queues for darshan
  • Better hotel availability at comparatively reasonable prices

September is highly recommended for travelers who want to avoid peak-season rush but still enjoy safe road conditions.

Pros & Cons of Char Dham Yatra in September

Pros:

  • Less crowded temples
  • Peaceful darshan experience
  • Scenic views with lush greenery
  • Better accommodation options

Cons:

  • Temperatures are colder than summer months
  • Early mornings and nights can be chilly

Quick Travel Tips for September

  • Carry light to medium woolens, especially for mornings and evenings
  • Check weather updates before travel
  • Ideal month for senior citizens and peace-seeking pilgrims

4) Char Dham Yatra in October – Weather, Crowd & Personal Experience

October is the last month to visit Char Dham Yatra before winter closure and is ideal for pilgrims who prefer very low crowds and peaceful darshan. However, weather conditions become colder, especially toward the end of the month.

Why October Is Chosen for Char Dham Yatra

  • Cold but mostly stable weather with temperatures between 5°C to 15°C

  • Clear skies and sharp mountain views

  • Very low crowd levels compared to summer months

  • Suitable for travelers seeking solitude and spiritual calm

I personally traveled to Yamunotri and Gangotri in October. The crowd was extremely less, and darshan was smooth and peaceful. However, since I am not a cold or snowfall lover, this month did not suit me personally. The temperature drops quickly, especially in the mornings and evenings.

For travelers who love cold weather and light snowfall, late October is a good option before the temples close.

Crowd & Travel Conditions in October

  • Very minimal crowd across all Char Dham temples

  • Short darshan queues and easy accommodation availability

  • Some services may slow down toward the end of October due to weather

Pros & Cons of Char Dham Yatra in October

Pros:

  • Least crowded month of the yatra season

  • Peaceful and spiritual atmosphere

  • Ideal for photography and quiet darshan

Cons:

  • Cold weather, especially at higher altitudes

  • Possible early snowfall in late October

  • Not suitable for travelers sensitive to cold

Quick Travel Tips for October

  • Carry heavy woolens, gloves, and thermal wear

  • Plan the yatra early in October to avoid sudden weather changes

  • Keep track of official Char Dham closing dates

5) Months to Avoid for Char Dham Yatra (July & August)

July and August are not recommended for the Char Dham Yatra due to heavy monsoon rainfall in Uttarakhand. These months often experience landslides, road closures, flash floods, and slippery trekking routes, making travel unsafe despite the temples being open.

Why July–August Is Risky for Char Dham Travel

  • Continuous heavy rainfall across the Garhwal Himalayas
  • Frequent landslides and roadblocks on mountain routes
  • Poor visibility and foggy conditions
  • Helicopter services often suspended due to bad weather
  • High risk for senior citizens and family travelers

Although Char Dham temples remain open during the monsoon, travel safety is a major concern, and delays or cancellations are common.

If you must travel during the monsoon season, follow these safety precautions:

  • Check daily weather and landslide alerts from official sources
  • Avoid trekking or driving after sunset
  • Keep buffer days in your itinerary for unexpected delays
