Triyuginarayan Temple History:

akhand dhuni temple

This holy temple is most famous as the Shiv Parvati marriage place and the perpetual fire, which is believed to be active since the marriage of the dietis, and hence this temple is also known as Akhand Dhuni Temple.

The exact origin of this temple is yet unknown, but it found its first mention in the Skand Puran, which signifies this holy marriage took place in the presence of all the deities, with Lord Brahma acting as the head priest of the temple and Lord Vishnu acting as the brother of Maa Parvati.

So Trijuginarayan temple is basically dedicated to lord Vishnu, but finds its link to all three prime deities of this universe—Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh (Lord Shiva).

The construction and renovation of this temple were often credited to early rulers of this region and especially to Adi Shankaracharya, who worked effortlessly in this region to reestablish Hinduism and Hindu temples in this region.

Since then, the temple has been reconstructed and renovated numerous times, keeping the natural essence of this temple alive.

Legend of Lord Shiva and Parvati Devotion:

According to Hindu Mythology, Triyuginarayan is the capital of Himvat (father of Goddess Parvati). She was the rebirth of Sati (first wife of lord shiva). It is believed that Devi Parvati paid penance at Gaurikund near Triyuginarayan to win lord Shiva’s affection. Lord Shiva was affected by her devotion and proposed to her at Guptkashi, and finally, the wedding took place at the Trijuginarayan temple.

As per the holy scriptures, this marriage took place in Satyuga. The marriage was a great ceremony, which was attended by many gods and sages. Lord Vishnu arranged the marriage and performed the main rituals, like KanyaDaan, as the brother of Devi Parvati. The temple in Triyuginarayan is dedicated to lord vishnu in his honour. Lord Brahma served as the main priest of the wedding.

The Eternal Flame (Akhand Dhuni) : One of the main features of the temple, Also known as Akhand Dhuni Temple, due to a sacred Fire in the temple, it is believed to have been continuously burning since the divine wedding of Lord Shiva and Devi Parvati in Sat Yuga, and it symbolises their divine love and everlasting union, attracting couples who wish to get married in the auspicious aura of the site and seek marital blessings. Devotees offer wood to this dhuni and take the ashes as a blessing.

The Triyugi Narayan temple's stunning architecture is a monument to the talent and workmanship of the workers at that time. The temple was built in accordance with conventional North Indian architectural design (Nagara style) utilising regional stones, and its design is very much identical to the Kedarnath temple.

The sacred picture of Lord Vishnu is kept in the main sanctuary, which is decorated with beautiful carvings and sculptures. Impressive reliefs on the external walls show numerous scenes from Hindu mythology, luring visitors into this area of heavenly attraction.

The temple complex also has a holy fire pit where it is said that Lord Shiva's eternal flame has been blazing ever since the time of their marriage, and due to this perpetual fire, this trijuginarayan temple got its name as the akhand dhuni temple.
