About Gangotri Temple
Gangotri is a sacred pilgrimage shrine, located in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, in the Uttarkashi district. The temple is situated at an elevation of 3,100 meters (10,1170 feet) above sea level, and it is surrounded by snow-capped peaks. It is the key pilgrimage site of the Char Dham yatra circuits and is often the main headstream of the Ganga River.
The Gaumukh glacier near the Gangotri temple is the actual source of the Ganga River. The temple holds immense spiritual significance, which is associated with the legend of King Bhagirathi. It is believed that King Bhagirath performed deep meditation here to please the Ganga River for its descent to the earth and to cleanse the sins of his ancestors and bring salvation for them.

Traditionally, the Gangotri opening date is tied to the occasion of Akshaya Tritya (which falls in April/May), and the closing of Gangotri temple is tied to Bhai Dooj (which falls in October/November). Here are the tentative dates of the Opening and Closing of the Gangotri temple.
Gangotri Temple Opening Date 2026:
The opening date for the Gangotri temple is announced by the official committee of the Char Dham temple, the head priest (Rawals) consulting the pandit samaj and using the Hindu calendar (Panchang) and holy scriptures to calculate the auspicious timing for the opening.
The head priest of Gangotri Dham generally comes from the Brahmin community from Mukhim Village near Harshil in Uttarkashi district. The decision of opening and closing of the temple is officially announced by the Gangotri temple committee, under the supervision of the Uttarkashi district administration and the Uttarakhand Chardham Devasthanam Board (BKTC)
For 2026, the opening date has not been announced yet; generally, they are announced on the occasion of Basant Panchami falls on 23 January 2026 (Friday) . Observation of traditional rituals shows that the Gangotri temple is open, along with Yamunotri, on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya , which falls on 19 April 2026 , so the Kapat of Gangotri temple is tentatively opening on 19th April 2026 .
Rituals/Ceremony during the opening of the temple:
The Kapat opening ceremony grants a grand procession called “Utsav Murti Mela “, which is led by the temple authorities and attended by thousands of devotees. In a ceremony, the idol of Goddess Ganga is carried in a doli, decorated with flowers, from her winter abode in Mukhba village (which is one among the winter char dhams of Uttarakhand ) to the main Gangotri temple. The Pujaris conduct Vedic rituals during the opening, which is marked as the beginning of the pilgrimage season.
Thousands of devotees, locals and saints join this grand celebration. The beautifully decorated palanquin of Maa Ganga is being carried from Mukhba village to the Gangotri temple. This is a small journey of about 20 kms, which is covered in just 1 day. The procession generally starts early in the morning on the opening day, i.e. Akshy Tritiy, from Mukhba village and reaches the Gangotri temple by Afternoon or evening. The doli stops briefly at Dharali and Lanka bridge for a ceremonial aarti.
Once the Utsav murti reaches the temple, the idol is installed in the temple. While opening of the temple, a grand Aarti is performed with the sound of bells, drums and Vedic chants. The opening ceremony of the Gangotri temple is being celebrated as a grand festival in this region.
Gangotri Closing date 2026:
The closing date is declared on the auspicious occasion of Vijayadashami (Dussehra), which falls in Sep/Oct. Like the opening date of the temple, the closing date of the Gangotri temple is also being decided by the head priests (Rawals) and Gangotri temple committee members. Traditionally, the temple closing date is fixed on the occasion of Govardhan Puja or Bhai Dooj (the day after Diwali), which marks the closure of the pilgrimage season. Here is the tentative closing date of Gangotri on the observation of traditional rituals.
Rituals performed during the closing of the temple
The closing of the Gangotri temple involves the last puja before its winter closure. Rituals during the closing ceremony are the Ganga Aarti and the last prayers. The temple is decorated with lamp lines, or diyas, on the closing date, and the idol of Goddess Ganga is shifted to her winter abode in Mukhba Village; this event signifies the closure of the pilgrimage season.
While closing of the temple, Vedic rituals, Bhajans, Special pujas like Ganga Pujan and shyan aarti are performed before closing of the doors of Gangotri temple. The environment turns emotional when the Utsav murti of Maa Ganga is being transferred from the santrum sanctorium of the Gangotri temple to the beautifully decorated doli. This doli again traces the same route to reach Mukhba village after travelling about 20 kms.
This procession consists of locals, saints, committee members, along with the sound of bells, conch shells, drums and Vedic chants.
