  • Those who started from Delhi will board the AC Volvo Semi Sleeper bus back to Delhi.

About the Laka Glacier Trek

Laka Glacier, also known as the Snowline, is a glacial wonder in the Dhauladhar range at around 3,200 m (10,500 ft) — a stunning blue-and-white landscape in summer and a full winter wonderland from November to March. It's one of the easiest treks in India that actually reaches a glacier, just 13 km one-way from McLeodganj on a well-marked, easy-to-moderate route.

En route, Triund top offers sweeping sunset views of the Dhauladhar range and Kangra valley, with bonfires under a star-filled sky and, in winter, ankle-deep snow along the trail — making it one of the best weekend getaways from Delhi and Chandigarh.

Laka Glacier Trek Difficulty

At 3,200 meters (10,500 feet) in the Kangra valley, this trek is rated easy-to-moderate and works well for first-timers and seasonal trekkers alike. The trail passes through dense forest and some rugged, slippery stretches, so a reasonable fitness level and the right gear make a real difference — especially with the region's unpredictable weather and low temperatures.

Laka Glacier Height

The trek tops out at 10,500 ft (3,200 m) at Laka Glacier itself, with Triund top along the way offering views of Moon Peak, Rifle Horn, Arthur’s Seat and the Dhauladhar range. At this altitude, oxygen levels are close to normal, so mild altitude effects (headache, breathlessness, fatigue) are possible but uncommon — walk at a steady pace, drink 3–4 litres of water a day, carry a personal medical kit, and tell your trek leader immediately if you feel unwell. If you have a pre-existing heart or lung condition, consult your doctor before booking.

Laka Glacier Trek Distance

The full round trip from McLeodganj is 26 km over 3 days: 9 km to Triund base camp on Day 1, 8 km round trip to the glacier and back on Day 2, and 9 km back to McLeodganj on Day 3.

Distance varies by starting point: Dharamshala to Laka Glacier is 18 km one-way (12–14 hours, an overnight stop at Triund is recommended). Triund to Laka Glacier is 4 km one-way (8 km round trip). McLeodganj to Laka Glacier, via Bhagsunag waterfall and Gallu Devi temple, is the full 26 km covered over the 3-day itinerary above.

Best Time to Visit Laka Glacier

Laka Glacier is trekkable year-round, though it's best to avoid July–August due to heavy rainfall and landslide risk. For guaranteed snow, trek between November and March, when the entire route is blanketed in white; for green valleys and blooming rhododendrons without the crowds, the spring shoulder months work well too.

October brings clear skies, pleasant 11–22°C days and blooming rhododendrons — widely considered the best month to visit.

December is peak snow season, with temperatures between -1°C and 7°C — the month to visit if you want guaranteed snowfall and a snow-covered campsite.

Strength training tips

The stretch from Triund to Laka Glacier is steeper than the Triund trek itself, so if you're not a regular walker, start preparing about 15 days out: daily brisk walking (build up to 5–6 km), plus basic squats, lunges and push-ups to condition your legs and shoulders for carrying a daypack. Warm up and stretch before and after each session.

No, the trekking to the Laka glacier is not difficult. In fact, it's a very beginner-friendly trek. This trek falls under the difficulty level of easy-to-moderate. The total trekking distance is 26 km, which we are going to cover in a time span of 3 days and 2 nights. The maximum altitude of the Snowline trek is 10,500 feet (3,200 meters), which is an average height to trek at.

While on your Snowline trek, you will be provided with waterproof toilet tents — 2 to 4 tents depending on the size of the group, each with a deep pit for nature calls, a mound of soil and a shovel to cover it up. Toilet paper is also provided during camping.

Yes, the Snowline or Triund Laka glacier trek is completely safe for solo trekkers. It is one of the most famous winter treks in Himachal Pradesh, so thousands of trekkers trek on this route on a daily basis. In addition to that, here at Manchala Mushafir, we put the utmost importance on safety, especially for solo girls coming on this beautiful trek.

Snow cover depends on the month and recent weather. The route is typically snow-covered from November to March, with December and January bringing the heaviest snowfall — by late February you'll still see a thick blanket of snow from Triund onward. September to May is the best window, with clear skies and pleasant weather. November to March gives guaranteed snow but colder nights and possible trail closures in heavy snowfall; April–June and September–November offer clear skies and green trails without the snow.
