Hello guys, I’m Poonam, and in September 2025, I travelled to Dehradun with my friends. While most people rush to Mussoorie or Nainital, we wanted to experience lesser-known hill stations of Uttarakhand that offer raw nature, silence, and soulful mountain vibes — and that’s how we discovered Chakrata.

we visited Chakrata, which was an expectation to connect with nature and enhance my soul.

Chakrata History

The History of Chakrata lies with its establishment by the Britishers in the colonial era, 1866 to 1947. Before its establishment, the area was under the Sirmor Kingdom of the Garhwal region and was later occupied by the Gorkha.


During the Anglo-Nepalese War in 1858, the British expelled the Gorkhas and occupied Chakrata. In 1858, the modern town was established by Colonel Hume as a British Army Cantonment. For Britishers, the town serves as a summer retreat due to its pleasant climate.


After the Independence of India, Chakrata remained a restricted military area under the Indian Army. Today, it is a permanent garrison of the Special Frontier Force (SFF). Serene environment, rhododendron forest, trekking trails, and towering peaks make it a popular hill station. It took its name from the local Chakrata Tribe, who inhabited this region.

You can reach here by air, train, or road. But there is no direct air or train connectivity to the place itself, as it is a cantonment area. So you must travel by road for the final leg of the journey.

By Air: The Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun is the nearest airport to Chakrata from Dehradun town, located 115 km away, and has great connectivity to major cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore. Fly to the Dehradun airport, and from there, taxis are readily available for this beautiful town. 


By Train: Travelling here by train is the most economical option to reach Chakrata, but it doesn’t have its own railway station. Dehradun Railway Station, which is approximately 90 km away, and Haridwar Railway Station, approximately 140 km away from Chakrata, are the nearest railheads. Rishikesh Railway Station is another major hub of Uttarakhand; you can take a train to any of these stations and, from there, complete the rest of your journey by road. 


By Road: Road travel is the primary and most popular way to reach here. The town has great connectivity by road via Dehradun, Delhi, etc. You can take a state-run bus to Dehradun or hire a private taxi for direct access and a comfortable journey.

By Air (Faster): Take a flight from Delhi’s IGI Airport to Jolly Grant Airport. Daily flights are available for this route by Indigo and Air India, and the flight takes one hour. From Dehradun airport, take a taxi or cab to reach Chakrata hill station.

By Road (most popular): A Road Journey is a convenient option. You can reach Chakrata from Delhi by road, either by self-driving or by hiring a private cab. There are two primary routes to travel from Delhi by road, which are—


Via Dehradun: Delhi → Ghaziabad → Haridwar → Dehradun → Vikasnagar → Chakrata. This route is slightly longer and expected to have heavy traffic. 


Via Saharanpur: Delhi → Meerut → Muzaffarnagar → Saharanpur → Herbertpur → Chakrata. This route is often used to avoid traffic in the Dehradun area and for better road conditions.
