About Kainchi Dham & Trip Highlights
Kainchi Dham, Bhowali, Nainital district, Uttarakhand is the ashram and Hanuman temple of Neem Karoli Baba (Maharaj-ji), set beside the Shipra river about 17 km from Nainital. The temple was consecrated on 15 June 1964, which is why the Foundation Day falls on that date. Jageshwar Dham is a group of over 100 ancient Shiva temples near Almora, and Chitai Golu Devta temple, famous for its thousands of bells, is on the way (see distances to Chitai). Mukteshwar is a quiet hill town with an old Shiva temple and wide Himalayan views. Hotel nights are charged at ₹4,000 (standard) or ₹6,000 (deluxe) per double room. All prices are +5% GST.
Crowd Days & 15 June Foundation Day Advisory
The quietest time to visit Kainchi Dham is a weekday morning (except Tuesday). Tuesdays and Saturdays are Hanuman days and draw large crowds, as do weekends, long weekends and the summer holidays. On peak days the queue can take several hours and traffic backs up on the Bhowali road.
Foundation Day, 15 June: the temple's anniversary bhandara draws lakhs of devotees. In 2026 the Nainital administration did not allow private vehicles to Kainchi from 13 to 16 June. Visitors parked at Bhimtal, Vikas Bhawan, Metropole and DSA grounds and took shuttles, with more shuttles from Haldwani and Kathgodam. Expect similar rules in 2027. If you want to be there on 15 June, book early and plan for a long wait and a shuttle ride; if you want a calm darshan, avoid 12-17 June.
Monsoon (July-August) brings landslide risk on the hill roads; March-June and September-November are the best months.
Kainchi Dham Tour for Elders & Families
- Choose the 3D/2N trip and avoid the overnight trip, so nobody spends a night in the car.
- Pick an Innova Crysta for more legroom; we stop every 2-3 hours for washrooms and tea.
- The ashram is at road level. On normal days the walk from the drop point is short; on peak days vehicles may stop farther away, so visit on a weekday.
- Ground-floor rooms are requested from the hotel for elders; tell us about any medical needs when you book.
- Kainchi sits lower than Nainital, in a river valley, so altitude is not a concern for most people. Carry regular medicines and a warm layer for the evening.

Driving yourself is cheapest, but it means 15-17 hours at the wheel on hill roads in two days. The package costs a little more and gives you a professional hill driver, pre-booked rooms and darshan timing planned around the crowds.

Kainchi Dham is about 330-360 km from Delhi by road (Google Maps shows about 363 km). The drive takes 7 to 8.5 hours via Hapur, Moradabad, Rampur, Haldwani and Bhowali, plus breakfast and lunch stops.
No. Entry to Kainchi Dham is free and there is no VIP, paid or special darshan. Everyone joins the same queue, so be wary of anyone selling a "VIP pass". On normal weekdays darshan takes 15-45 minutes; on Tuesdays, weekends and around 15 June it can take several hours.
The ashram is generally open from about 6 AM to 7 PM. These timings are not officially published and can change with the season or on festival days, so we plan the first darshan for the evening you arrive and a second, quieter one early the next morning.
Tuesdays, Saturdays, weekends, public holidays and the days around the 15 June Foundation Day are the busiest. The best time is a weekday between March and June or September and November, ideally early in the morning. July and August bring heavy rain and landslide risk on the hill roads.
