Nandaprayag’s mythology and history are deeply rooted in Hindu legends. The town is associated with King Nanda, the foster father of Lord Krishna, and Lord Vishnu. Historically, it was the former capital of the Yadu Kingdom. The site’s sacred rivers, temples, and legends make it an important spiritual destination.

  • Legends of King Nanda Penance: According to the Hindu beliefs, King Nanda performed Yajna (a fire ritual) at this sacred place to get Lord Vishnu as his son. Lord Vishnu was impressed by his devotion and granted his wish, but with the incarnation, Lord Krishna was born to Devki and Vasudeva and raised by Yashoda and King Nanda.
  • Mahabharata’s Legend: Some other legends state that King Dushyant and maiden Shakuntala's wedding took place at this sacred site.
  • Gopal Ji temple & Nanda’s Temple: Two ancient temples, one is dedicated to Lord Krishna (Gopal Ji temple) and the other is to King Nanda, honouring this site, which is nursed by Nanda and Yashoda.

  • By Air: The Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun is the nearest to Nandraprayag, so you can take a flight from your city to Dehradun airport. From there, you need to travel by road via taxi or bus.

    In case you don't get a direct flight till Dehradun or ticket price is very high, then you can also book your flight till Indra Gandhi International airport in New Delhi. It is also the nearest international airport to the holy city of confluence. You can continue rest of the journey by train or bus.
