Uttarkashi Tunnel Update (Latest News)


The Uttarkashi tunnel is a road construction tunnel, as part of the Char Dham all-weather road project in Uttarakhand, India.  It is also known as the Silkyara-Barkot Tunnel, and it collapsed in November 2023, which gained international attention.  Around 41 workers get trapped in it for 17 days, and the government announces a rescue operation to get all the workers out safely. 


Rescue operation & Timeline: The multi-agency rescue operation was planned, which involved supplying oxygen, food and water for the trapped workers. The manual drilling is created with steel pipes to create an escape. All 41 workers were rescued safely with no critical injury on 28 November 2023, after 17 days of collapse. 


Latest Updates: After this incident, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highway development of Uttarakhand developed a new standard operating procedure for tunnel alignments and approval of national highways. The prime benefit of this construction is that once this tunnel is ready, it reduces the travel time between Dharsi and Yamunotri.
